SEVERE BLOW TO LAMPETER MUSIC CLUB
The Arts Council of Wales has withdrawn its grant to Lampeter Music club, attributing this to a decline in Lottery funding. This is a great blow for members and for the general public who have been attending the Club’s concerts over the past 27 years..
The Club has consistently provided the community with classical music of a very high standard. It has arranged workshops in local schools as well as supporting the Young Musician of Dyfed competitions, worked closely with the Lampeter Chamber Orchestra and given opportunities to local musicians to try their wings. Concert goers will remember with great pleasure the recent concert by the Carducci Quartet, and the performance by the Club president, Elinor Bennett with the Maggini Quartet, playing ‘Mapping Wales’ by the composer and patron of the Club, John Metcalf, especially commissioned to mark the Millennium.
It would be a great pity if this all had to stop. Members of the Committee have been working hard to try to find other sources of funding and inevitably the Club will need to have fundraising events during the next year.
Mark Williams AS/MP has been very supportive and has sought to get answers to some of the questions as yet unsolved. Dr George Lilley, Honorary Vice President and founder of the Club has been active in pleading the cause to the Chair of the Arts Council of Wales.
Although the grant from the Arts Council was small, without it, the Club will find it difficult to continue with the high standards it has always maintained. Members of the Committee, patrons, and Club members, all voluntary, will be making every effort to raise funds to ensure that these standards do not fall.
The Club is very grateful to the University of Wales, Lampeter for hosting the concerts, to Lampeter and Ceredigion councils for their financial support, to our advertisers and to all who enjoy our concerts and wish them to continue.
